This is a great audiobook for anybody interested in martial arts, competitive strategy, samurai's and their training and ethics, Japan, Japanese culture, Oriental culture and philosophy, and especially the Samurai and Bushido.

This is especially helpful for martial artists in understanding the mental aspects of training and strategy in fighting. Once you listen to this audiobook you will know where Bruce Lee developed most of his fighting philosophy and style from. Pay careful attention to the water and fire chapter and you will see it is almost exactly the same as Bruce Lee developed - except This was written in 1643 - 300 years before Bruce Lee was born. Based upon the life and death fights of Musashi, knowledge gained from his samurai father warrior and almost 20 years of study and reflection solely on martial strategy, Musashi produced the most useful book ever made for one to one individual combat and a very useful study for group combat.

This audiobook explains practical combat theories, training, and execution. It is an original translation and one absolutely unique - IT IS ACCURATELY AND MINIMALLY INTERPRETED ! We have looked at some of the translations available and can say that most of them are abridged (even though they do not admit it) and are highly interpretive ( read opinions of the translator / author added to the material - not from Musashi - how do you know what he actually wrote in these cases ?)

This translation is so accurate ( we translated from a copy of the original 1645 manuscript that Musashi wrote) that we did very minimal correction of the grammatical and verbal problems in translating not only these two very different language, but in changing it to modern language. The result is an audiobook that is often grammatically incorrect, but much more vivid and accurate. Actually, the irony of this is, that this book is much less abstract than others. Because we did not worry about trying to rephrase things to make it pass the English teacher's inspection, we were able to maintain the direct, specific, language and meaning that Musashi imparted.

If you are a stickler for proper English, you may not enjoy this audiobook, however if you want to get the true text and meaning that Musashi wrote and are willing to listen to a few things a couple of times we are sure that you will be very pleased with this translation of The Book of 5 Rings.

On War by Clausewitz

The study of "total war", politics, and power, On War is the most respected study of military strategies and tactics by those in the military and high level politicians.

On War is an exhaustive study on war, its cause, politics, and the power behind it. Clausewitz believes that war and politics must be considered in combination.

On War is a difficult to follow at times, due it being written in the context of 19th century European war and politics; however, it is systematic and unmatched in power and effectiveness.

On War proceeds from the basic elements of war (conflict and aggression) and proceeds to throughly cover all the main aspects and many ancillary aspects of war. Why does war occur ? What is its nature ? How can success be obtained ? Total war, the politics of war, external factors and much more are considered as part of a systematic military blueprint built to achieve the enemies' subjugation. It is the most comprehensive study of the theory of war and its strategies and tactics available.

With a little imagination the On War is readily applied to virtually any competitive situation. On War is essential reading for anyone in any competitive or strategic position / situation - especially leaders.

THE PRINCE by Machiavelli

This audiobook will help you understand what people mean when they say "Machiavellian". It will help you protect yourself from and take advantage of the theories of The Prince that many use to obtain power and develop competitive superiority.

The Prince is a real world study of how power is gained and maintained. The Prince describes the process of gaining and administering power. Machiavelli outlines "the game rules" between competitive humans. It is readily applied with a little imagination to a team, company, group, institutional, or governmental context.

The Prince is one of the true classics of Western Civilization and its principles have been used by a numerous and diverse group of Western (and probably Eastern) leaders including, undoubtedly Abraham Lincoln, Hitler, and many Presidents and CEO's of Western Corporations.

It is a blue print of how to top others and gain power, and to secure and enlarge power. More than just theory The Prince is a study of strategy as applied with politics and cunning to gain power.

The Prince portrays the chaotic, tumultuous world of 16th century Europe and of earlier periods to provide context to his theories. Machiavelli clearly imparts his belief that mal deeds may be required by a leader for the greater good of all. Machiavelli imparts that religious and moral values are inappropriate in competition. The most desirable choice is circumstantially dependent. Machiavelli essentially theorizes that decency, honesty, and religion can not be observed by "a prince" as it may imperil their state. The realization of goals are more important than any other consideration - the end is more important than the means "it is better to be feared than loved."

The Prince also relates to psychology and depicts methods of gaining and staying in power, to maintain a fair and stable governance. Machiavelli expresses that the ruler must be loved or feared. The Prince has been lauded and defiled as a theoretical study of amoral beliefs and political trickery.

Machiavelli was a savvy Italian politician and lady's man with much of the information being quite useful in the most difficult war and complex political negotiation: women. Most of the concepts of this book are still true and applicable today and readily applied to modern business and competition. It is an essential study for those in competitive environments and situations. Success can certainly be achieved in ways other than Machiavelli depicts; However, if for only self-protection it is prudent to know the Machiavellian theories so you can recognize it and protect yourself from those who use it.
